Between the center and the edge and the inside and outside. JONATHAN MUECKE
Volume Gallery is pleased to participate in Design Miami 2013 in the ON/SITE section with a solo exhibition of Jonathan Muecke.
Designer Jonathan Muecke operates around the edge of design, emphasizing an object’s conceptual purpose and universal meaning. Referred to as Open Objects, Muecke’s practice is motivated by bringing out the raw quality in an object, to move beyond the object itself – demonstrating his continual practice to un-define objects while defining something larger. Through their strong visual language, Open Objects not only redefine our understanding of functionality but our interaction with space and environment.
Muecke creates a dialog with the user by ‘disturbing or collapsing the perimeters of an object such as geometry or depth of field or perspective. His objects demand to be figured out – the lack of directives as to how exactly to use Muecke’s designs invites intuitive forms of interaction’ – thus creating an open relationship between user and object (Field Essays, Sophie Krier, 2013).
Focusing on the contradiction between object and surroundings Muecke’s work transcends traditional notions of form and function in his exploration of something new. Stabilizer, a carbon fiber free standing object illustrates Muecke’s continuation of common design typologies, allowing the user a comfortable starting point to think beyond their familiar notions of use and material. Muecke refers to Stabilizer as an interior horizon. as the work mimics that of the horizon line. Purposefully designed to constantly shift, Stabilizer prevents the viewer from direct alignment thus providing an unknown position between the two entities. In collapsing size, proportion, color, shape, weight, and texture, Muecke removes the limitation of understanding and encourages the viewer to interact not react to the object know I have been successful when these traits [become] equalized and you can’t distinguish between them; when the shape is the color or the scale is the material.
Motivated by the possibility of something new Muecke brings out the raw quality in an object through material, form, and function. His Open Objects create new modes of perception as they enable perception to travel both ways.
