Volume Gallery will be participating in the 2023 edition of NADA New York from May 18 – 21, 2023 with new ceramic pieces by Jennefer Hoffmann, new stone and wood pieces by Sung Jang, and recent work by Christy Matson. Recent bodies of work by all three artists take on humanity’s complex and ever-evolving relationship with landscape.
New pillar and mound-shaped ceramics by Jennefer Hoffmann reference rolling hills, wasp nests, steeples, and pagodas. The thoughtfully hand-formed sculptures have soft edges and visible fingerprints. Through references to devotional architecture and landscape, the body of work considers how place can provide meaning and feeling.
Sung Jang’s deliberate combinations of stone and wood are intended to honor the condition and history of the stones just as they are when he finds them. Jang constructs a wooden base to support the stone, helping the natural form to find balance. With their light touch, the pieces reflect a traditional Korean dynamic with nature, one of appreciation and respect.
Christy Matson begins her subtly colored weavings with a sketch, collage, or watercolor that she translates into complex pixelized images to be woven by a hand-operated, computer-programmable Jacquard loom. Matson’s painterly explorations of surface and pictorial space reference the history of Modernism as well as the history of textiles from all over the world.
