Volume Gallery is pleased to announce its participation in the 2023 edition of EXPO CHICAGO with a presentation of work by Tanya Aguiñiga, Luftwerk, Aranda\Lasch and Terrol Dew Johnson, and Anders Ruhwald.
This presentation will debut several new ceramic pieces by Chicago-based Danish-born artist Anders Ruhwald from his Glasur Stykke body of work. Ruhwald’s Glasur Stykke series–a Danish term that translates to glaze piece–investigates the nature of glaze and ceramic materials. The compelling vessel-like forms use vibrant color, brazen texture, and simple but unique shape and scale. The series acts as an intuition-driven mode of discovery and can be understood as like a drawing practice, an ongoing exploration without programmed output.
The gallery will also be exhibiting weavings by Los Angeles-based artist and activist Tanya Aguiñiga. Aguiñiga’s off-loom cotton rope weavings are rife with personality and often embedded with symbolic materials connected to the artist’s heritage and experience. Her weavings and other objects are craftivist gestures, using both traditional and experimental techniques to uplift Mesoamerican maker traditions.
Chicago-based artistic duo Luftwerk explores light, color, and perception in immersive, experience-based installations. Their sculptural lightbox, Hue #1, uses subtly changing washes of color and evokes the feeling of light on the landscape. The mesmerizing piece simulates the shifts in tones of light from dawn to dusk.
Recent objects by Aranda\Lasch and Terrol Dew Johnson transform materials of the Sonoran Desert into sculptural forms–the pieces on view at EXPO feature strands of agave fiber. Design studio Aranda\Lasch have collaborated with renowned artist and basket weaver Terrol Dew Johnson of the Tohono O’odham Nation for over a decade. Their collaboration stems from the commonalities of algorithmic techniques, repetition and ciphering used in both computer-generated design and Tohono O’odham basket weaving.
