Louisville, KY—Volume Gallery is taking over Land of Tomorrow’s exhibition space to present a curated body of work titled Foundation. Opening reception on May 3rd at 233 W. Broadway, Louisville, Kentucky.

Volume Gallery is an event-based gallery with a specific focus on American design, particularly emerging contemporary designers. In the past two years, Volume has released editions, publications and exhibits that showcase the work of American designers to regional, national and international audiences. In Foundation Volume brings together their released editions alongside new artists to showcase contemporary environments and create discourse on the current state of American design and studio practice.

The multiple perspectives in Foundation bring focus to the pluralism of contemporary design and art. The designers and artists represented (Jonathan Nesci, Felicia Ferrone, Rich Brilliant Willing, Jonathan Muecke, Thaddeus Wolfe and Wendy White) in Foundation each employ contemporary thought, technology or material in their works.

Jonathan Nesci/ HALE, an industrial design company founded by Jonathan Nesci in 2006, is a part-design, part-production firm based dually in Chicago, IL and Scottsburg, IN. In a relatively short time, HALE has created a wide range of products and has received recognition from leading design publications such as Wallpaper, Dwell, Metropolitan Home, Surface, and Art + Auction.

Felicia Ferrone studied architecture in the United States before beginning her career in Milan, apprenticing with some of today’s most influential architects and product designers, such as Piero Lissoni, DeStefano & Partners, and Antonio Citterio. Her minimalist sensibilities are evident in the formal simplicity of her Revolution Collection. These pieces were inducted into the permanent collection in The Art Institute of Chicago’s Architecture and Design collection and selected for presentation in the inaugural exhibition; May 2009.

Rich Brilliant Willing Founded in 2007, Rich Brilliant Willing is an internationally renowned design studio and one of the most exciting firms currently working in the United States. They consult for an international clientele including SCP, Innermost, Artecnica, Areaware and Urban Outfitters as well as producing a self-branded collection of furniture and lighting. Designing at various scales from packaging & products to interior spaces and installations, their methodology is evident in all their work. With a combination of technical sophistication and old-fashioned sleight of hand, they appropriate existing components and strategically rethink them. The moniker Rich Brilliant Willing, is exemplary of this process; re-imagining what was there to begin with: Theo Richardson, Charles Brill, Alexander Williams.

Rich Brilliant Willing was named among the “Top 40” designers by I.D. magazine in January 2009 and named an Avant Guardian by Surface magazine in November of the same year. With recent publication in Wallpaper*, FRAME and multiple appearances in The New York Times their notoriety continues to grow.

Jonathan Muecke was born in 1983 in Cody, Wyoming. He works from his studio in Minneapolis, Minnesota since his graduation from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2010 where from 2009-10 he was the Florence Knoll scholar. In 2006 he received a Bachelors of Architecture from Iowa State University followed in 2007 by an internship at the architectural office of Herzog & de Meuron in Basel, Switzerland. In July of 2010 the jury of the Design Parade 5 (Hyéres, France) assigned him the Veuve Clicquot Award. His field of work circulates around the periphery of design.

Thaddeus Wolfe (b.1979) studied art and design with a focus in glass at the The Cleveland Institute of Art where he received a BFA in 2002. He has held artist residencies at Pilchuck Glass School, The Creative Glass Center of America in New Jersey and the Tacoma Glass Museum. His work has been exhibited in various group shows in New York at Heller Gallery, Matter and Still House. Thaddeus lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.

Wendy White (American, b. 1971) lives and works in New York City. She received her M.F.A. from Rutgers University in 2003. She was also part of Third Thoughts at the CCA Andratx, Mallorca, Spain, curated by Barry Schwabsky and Carol Szymanski. Her paintings were first seen at the gallery in the group exhibition Rattled by the Rush. In 2011, she will be part of Informal Relations at the Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art, Indianapolis, IN.
